Liyang supports Lumad environmental defenders’ campaigns to Defend Pantaron Mountain Range and Pulangi. Pantaron Mountain Range is a critical and endangered biodiversity hotspot which serves as a major ecological and geographical backbone of Mindanao. Because of its natural riches, the Pantaron has long been coveted by large-scale mining, logging, and agri-business companies who eye its rich mineral deposits and vast tracts of fertile land. The Pulangi River connects Pantaron to the lowlands of Mindanao, where millions of people depend on its waters for their livelihood. The Pulangi is fed by the second largest watershed in the Philippines, leaving it vulnerable to the effects of mining pollution and large-scale environmental destruction. This river is also targeted by power firms that seek to dam portions of the river.
Both Pantaron Range and Pulangi River comprise the ancestral lands of the Lumad, who are unyielding in their struggle to protect these crucial natural resources and biodiversity hotspots. Liyang supports their work by raising awareness of the threats against Pantaron and Pulangi, and by supporting the crucial organizing of environmental defenders on the frontlines.
